Linear Equation
An equation in which the highest power of the variable is called a linear equation. A linear equation that has only one variable is called a linear equation in one variable.
The standard form of a linear equation in one variable is ax + b = c, where a, b and c are numbers and x is a variable.
You would remember that equations use the equality(=) sign;
Example: 3x = 10;
Others examples of Linear Equation
Some examples of equations are:
- 2x
- 2x+1
- 6z + 10 = 2
- 12 – 5z
these are linear equations.
- x2+ 1
- y2+ 4
- x2+ 3x – 7
these are not linear equations (highest power of variable >1 ).
Facts
A linear equation may have any rational number for its solution.
